Trip Overview. This was a 3 day / 2 night trip on the lower Roanoke River from Williamston to Plymouth, NC. The put-in was at the NC17 Bridge in Williamston, NC. The USGS gauge was just below 10, which is also flood stage. The current was moderate and we encountered few boats on the trip. Our first stop was the Conine platform on the Roanoke River. Each spring, Hickory Shad ascend the Roanoke, Chowan, Neuse and Tar rivers in North Carolina. These migrations are called "shad runs" and may cover hundreds of miles to the headwaters of these systems. Hickory shad typically spawn during the night in shallow water with a rocky bottom when water temperatures are between 58 F and 62 F.
